Yooperlite on ainutlaatuinen kivilaji that glows under ultraviolet light. It is not easy to distinguish it among other stones from the shore since it doesn’t attract attention in the broad daylight. But when illuminated by UV light,the yooperlite rock changes completely.

The glow of yooperlite comes from the sodalite within the rock. Different institutions and geological scientists have backed the claim with laboratory experiments. When exposed to the light of UV, especially of 365 nm wavelength, these yooperlite stones burst into vivid shades of orange-yellow, deep crimson, or soft pink, with each piece displaying its own distinctive effect depending on its mineral composition. 

If you would like to find Yooperlites, the ideal time is spring or after a heavy rain. After such a period, the lake waves wash over the rocky shore, and its much easier to find the fluorescent stones on the beach. A high, intensity ultraviolet flashlight is suggested, and please don’t forget outdoor safety. Besides the waterproof shoes, emergency communication equipment should be carried, and it is better to travel in groups.
